The Governor Jefferies House stands at the site of the first house built in what would become a planter's summer colony. Edisto planter Jacob Walter's 1788 summer residence in the town that would bear his name was rebuilt in 1879. For 228 years the property has been cared for by generations of distinguished families with additions and refinements culminating in a recent total renovation of all buildings on the property - house, springhouse, garage, workshop, and butler's cabin. The main house is Lowcountry elegant in the tradition of the summer cottages of prosperous plantation owners of the time. The house retains the patina of its history with eleven foot ceilings, wood floors, fine millwork, a fireplace in almost every room, french doors, and large porches.
