Carriage Properties agent Henry Laurens was in for a treat earlier this week when he learned that a local film team held a screening for recently-produced John Laurens’ War. A fifth-generation descendant of John Laurens, Henry is a Charleston native and prides himself in having roots that run through the deepest histories of the city.

The film was directed, co-written, and co-produced by Chris Weatherhead, alongside husband Clarence Felder as co-writer and Executive Producer. Robbin Knight (starring as John Laurens) & Richard Almes are also co-producers. John Laurens’ War is funded in part by the South Carolina Humanities Council and the Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, has won six international awards, five awards from Accolade in California (in acting, direction and cinematography) and a Gold Remi award from the 50th Houston Worldfest film festival.

Based on a true story, the film focuses on John Laurens and his fight to end slavery in America. In the film, Laurens and his freed slave, Phillip Shrewbury, defy many in their fight–including Laurens’ own father. In addition to his fight to end slavery, the John Laurens’ history tells the stories of his loyalty and service to George Washington. As one of Washington’s most trusted, Laurens was sent to France to convince the King to give America funding and naval support. A task that Ben Franklin was not able to successfully complete, Laurens was able to secure.

Laurens met a tragic end at the age of 28. During the 1782 Battle of Combahee with the British near Beaufort, SC, Laurens and his infantry were ambushed.

For those who may be unfamiliar with John Laurens, the soldier is also a featured character in Broadway’s Hamilton.

More information about the film, including a 5 minute trailer and many behind-the-scenes photos, can be found on the John Lauren’s War website.

One of the most recent additions to the Charleston real estate market, Fenwick Hall (pronounced as ‘fennick’) is sure to further pique the interest many have for Charleston’s grand history.

This gorgeous Georgian home was built during the early 1700’s by the Honorable Major General John Fenwick after having immigrated from England. While this property now includes a number of buildings, the original plantation home consisted of the main house , a kitchen house, and a carriage house. The latter two buildings have been restored within the last ten years, and the interior of Fenwick Hall’s main house has been prepared for interior renovating. Don’t fret–despite these interior updates, the original fireplaces and much of the original Georgian Cyprus still remain (pictured above).

The original structures are full of secrets and hidden treasures, including a number of secret passages within the house and tunnels under the plantation. While many of the passages have yet to be found, those that have been found are currently sealed up. Many believe that the secrets beneath Fenwick Hall come from pirates journeying along the Stono River. Over time, each of the owners have added their own flare while maintaining the beauty of the grounds and gardens.  View below the formal English garden, said to have been added in the early 2000’s–this garden certainly gives the plantation home a traditional English atmosphere.

Although Fenwick Hall is not currently open to the public, as many other famous Charleston plantations are, those interested in learning more about the history may find a rough timeline on the South Carolina Plantations website. Additional information, including in-depth tales of the aforementioned pirates and ghosts of the Fenwick family, can be found at the Fenwick Hall website.

Everett Porter Davison. Photo courtesy of Bev Seinsheimer.

Just before the chaos of Hurricane Irma, Realtor® Bev Seinsheimer was blessed with a grandchild. Everett Porter Davison was born at 10:00pm on September 7th, after having been induced in preparation for the coming hurricane. Despite Irma quickly diminishing into a tropical storm for the Lowcountry, we are glad to hear of the precautionary decision to induce the birth and are equally glad that all are safe. Baby Everett weighed in at 8 pounds, 3 ounces, and is roughly 20″ long.

Bev Seinsheimer, pictured in yellow, welcomes a new grandson. Photo courtesy of Spoleto Festival USA website and the Spoleto Society.

Mrs. Bev Seinsheimer has been with Carriage Properties for over 14 years, since January of 2003. Everett is the first grandson and the second grandchild Mrs. Seinsheimer has welcomed into the family.

Congratulations to the Seinsheimer’s and the Davison’s on the newest addition!
