Not many cities can boast their own architectural style. In Charleston, we’re proud to have created what is known as the Charleston single house, a home uniquely designed for the narrow lots that were laid out when our city was first developed in the 1700s.
We wrote a post a year ago with some beautiful drawings of a traditional Charleston single, as well as an explanation of their floor plan. One thing to note is that second and third floor piazzas were not original elements of the Charleston single—they were added on much later—but we’re glad to have them. Our weather here in the Lowcountry is particularly conducive to porch sitting!
For those shopping for a traditional Charleston single house, or for those interested in a short tour of our city’s favorite architectural style, we’ve gathered a few of the best Charleston Single homes currently listed for sale by Carriage Properties. Enjoy!
